Shay is a third year Hufflepuff, and a very proud one at that. His parents are halfbloods as well as his two older brothers, Sean and Seamus. He looks up to his father and brother Seamus and wishes to follow the family tradition of becoming a healer. He isn't particularly fond of his 'perfect' brother, Sean. Much to Shay's dismay, Sean succeeds in almost everything he does and is more popular than Shay could ever imagine. What disgusts Shay the most about his brother is his happy-go-lucky nice guy attitude that to Shay, seems to attract a flock of girls wherever he goes. He would much rather be like Seamus, who was mostly a loner during his school years.

Shay is completely clueless when it comes to all things female. He, like his father, is somewhat of a sexist and because he doesn't understand girls, is repulsed by them. All except his friend Ivy, of course. He doesn't even consider her a girl because she is so much different than any other he has ever met. However, she always seems to put Shay in his place when his sexist comments get out of hand.

Shay also has an unnatural obsession with bugs. He spends most of his free time digging up worms and on many occasions, eating them. His bug hunting often interferes with his studies, and he doesn't always receive the best grades because of it.
